Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
